How to clean SPC flooring?

To clean SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring effectively while maintaining its durability, follow these step-by-step guidelines and tips:

1. Daily and Weekly Maintenance

  • Regular Dusting/Sweeping:
Use a soft-bristle broom or microfiber mop to remove loose dirt, debris, and pet hair. Avoid using stiff brushes that could scratch the surface.
  • Dry Mopping:
For quick cleanups, use a dry microfiber mop to trap fine dust. This prevents particles from grinding into the floor and causing scratches.
  • Spot Cleaning for Spills:
Wipe up spills immediately with a damp (not soaking wet) microfiber cloth. Common spills like water, coffee, or juice can be cleaned with plain water. For sticky messes (e.g., sauce or oil), use a mild soap diluted in water and rinse with a clean damp cloth.

2. Deep Cleaning Steps

  • Prepare a Gentle Cleaning Solution:
Mix 1 gallon of warm water with 1–2 teaspoons of pH-neutral floor cleaner (avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners, which can damage the protective layer). Alternatively, use a mild dish soap diluted in water.
  • Mop the Floor:
Dip a microfiber mop into the solution, wring it out thoroughly to ensure it’s only slightly damp, and mop in the direction of the floor planks. Avoid excessive water, as spc flooring is water-resistant but not fully waterproof—standing water can seep into seams over time.
  • Rinse (If Needed):
If using soap, rinse the floor with a clean, damp mop to remove residue. Let the floor air dry or dry it with a clean towel.
  • Avoid Steam Mops or Harsh Tools:
Steam mops generate high heat and pressure, which can damage the vinyl layer or loosen adhesive. Scrub brushes, abrasive pads, or bleach-based cleaners should also be avoided, as they can scratch or discolor the floor.

3. Tips for Specific Stains

Stain Type Cleaning Method
Grease or Oil Apply a small amount of mild dish soap to the stain, let it sit for 5 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth. Rinse and dry.
Markers or Ink Gently dab the stain with a soft cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), then wipe with water. Test in a small, hidden area first.
Scuff Marks Use a tennis ball or eraser block to gently rub the scuff, or apply a small amount of white vinegar to a cloth and wipe the mark.
Rust or Hard Water Spots Mix equal parts water and white vinegar, apply to the spot with a cloth, let sit for 10 minutes, then wipe clean. Rinse thoroughly.

4. Preventive Measures to Extend Lifespan

  • Use Doormats: Place doormats at entryways to trap dirt and moisture, reducing the need for frequent deep cleaning.
  • Protect from Scratches: Install furniture pads under chairs and tables to prevent scratches when moving items. Avoid dragging heavy objects across the floor.
  • Control Humidity: SPC flooring is stable in most environments, but extreme humidity changes can cause expansion or contraction. Use a humidifier or dehumidifier as needed.
  • Avoid Wax or Polish: SPC flooring typically has a protective wear layer, so waxing or polishing is unnecessary and can leave a sticky residue.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Excessive Water: Over-wetting the floor can lead to swelling or damage to the core material.
  • Harsh Chemicals: Ammonia, bleach, or abrasive cleaners can degrade the surface finish.
  • Neglecting Regular Maintenance: Letting dirt accumulate can cause scratches over time, so consistent light cleaning is key.

By following these steps, you can keep your SPC flooring looking clean and new while preserving its durability for years. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific care recommendations, as some products may have unique requirements.
